My 5 favorite romantic movies

Last year around Valentine's Day I brought you lists of my favorite love songs and a list of my favorite sad love songs.  This year, I'm talking about my favorite romantic movies. And it's been tough, but I think I've narrowed it down to my top 5:

5. That Thing You Do!

I know this wonderful music biz film is great for a variety of reasons, but its understated romance is one of my favorite on-screen love stories ever. Liv Tyler is beautiful. And whatever happened to the actor who plays Guy Patterson? He was fantastic!

4. Moulin Rouge

This film is loud and bright and over-the-top everything. It's ridiculous, and I love it, because underneath all that craziness is a simple love story. And because Elton John and Bernie Taupin didn't know it at the time, but they really wrote "Your Song" for Ewan McGregor's crystal clear tenor.

3. Princess Bride

Is this a kissing story? Yes, yes it is. It's also a swashbuckling comedy, chock full of the most quotable one-liners to ever grace a cinema. Plus, Columbo is in it. And it's a tale of true love.

2. Breakfast at Tiffany's

This may be the only instance where I believe that the film redeemed the book, when our two messed-up protagonists finally figure out how to stay together. In the rain. With a cat!

1. Pride and Prejudice (1995)

Six hours of subtle glances and polite dances all building to one chaste, post-nuptial kiss may not seem like the stuff of romance novels, but Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle carry all the psychological drama of this classic tale just inches from the surface. It's a slow burn that the audience gets to enjoy for the whole, beautiful mini-series.

What's your favorite romantic movie?
