DIY Safety Pin Statement Necklace

Remember this statement necklace I wore a couple of months ago for the "bright color" style challenge? I made it a couple of years ago, using safety pins. Far away, it's hard to tell it's made of safety pins, but up close, you can see:

Making one for yourself is easy. All you need is an assortment of safety pins, some beads in small to medium sizes, some beading wire, and ribbon or some sort of cord to hang the necklace on. Also, some wire cutters will help.

Step one: unfasten your safety pins and start beading!

Step 2: Once you've beaded all your pins, lay them out the way you want them. For a double layered necklace, I like to use fewer pins on bottom than top to make a nice, tapered shape.

Step 3: thread the wire through the closed, round parts of your safety pins and spacer beads for the top layer.

Step 4: Cut your wire and bend the ends so you have little loops for your cord to go through and so that the safety pins can't come off.

Step 5: do the same for the bottom layer, this time threading through both the bottom part of the first layer of pins and the top of the next layer. This part took me several tries to get right.

Step 6: When you've cut and bent your wire for the bottom layer, you can thread your cord through and tie it in back. I like this silver cord because it almost looks like a real necklace chain. Or if you're feeling industrious, you can use necklace chain. You'll just need some of those little metal rings to attach it with. I'm obviously too lazy to go buy those things -- or to find out what their proper name is. Anyway, with the silver cord, I can make my necklace as long or as short as I want it, so who needs an actual chain?

Ta Da!

Obligatory "new haircut" selfie with the new necklace, too:
